BIOGRAPHY: TFG-181-Allen Earl served in the Civil War with the 52nd PA Volunteers. After moving West he enlisted again with a MN group and served in Grant's final push. He settled in Fulton, IL, after the war. After the death of his wife he "farmed out" his small boys. He became a wanderer. He always lived alone. He worked as a carpenter, fisherman, cigar maker, homesteader, to supplement his $12.00 per month pension. He lived in New Madrid, MO, Fulton, WI, Stillwater, MN, and finally in Custer, WA, where he died.
Concerning his motherless boys: William C. was raised by a family that migrated to WI, Frank was raised in Geneseo, IL and George H. was raised by a family named Bevins in Geneseo, IL.
This information came from Ray Fassett, Allen Earl's grandson.

March 8, 1880 - Letter from A. E. to George. Allan is in New Madrid, MO. Living back in swamp country, trapping and generally living off the land.
May 18, 1881 - Letter from A. E. to George. Allan is in Fulton, WI. He is staying with his brother, George W.
January 19, 1886 - Letter from A. E. to George. Allan is in Fulton, WI. He has built a small, 8x12, cabin in the woods about 2-1/2 miles from Fulton, WI.
December 29, 1894 - Letter from A. E. to George. Allan is in Somerset, WI. Talks about helping Will and his wintering place about six miles up river from Stillwater, MN. He is deaf.
Headstone has Civil War service as Corporal Co. F 23rd Regiment. Illinois Infantry

[10623] BIOGRAPHY: From Bio - Mr. Fassett was for years a contractor and builder in Brookings, but had of late years lived with his daughter in Watertown. He held a high place in the hearts of all who knew him for his lofty ideals of honesty and industry; he was unselfish to a fault in his dealings with men, and his devotion to his family and to the principles of right and justice in which he believed. He lived the principles of Chrisianity throughout his life.
