Note: Chitt was 22 years old when he emigrated to California in the summer of 1852 with his sister, Ann, and her husband, Parker Germain, and their three children. With a partner, William Hale, he opened a successful general store in the gold mining town of Placerville. He returned to Ohio briefly in the summer of 1854 and brought his younger brother, Harris Harding Fassett, back with him to help with his business, and by 1857, he had moved to San Francisco leaving Harris in charge of the store. His San Francisco ventures were also successful, and he traveled frequently extending his business interests throughout the region and into Mexico. He was able to send his father substantial funds from his profits, and after his marriage to Hattie Bottsford, they lived in Oakland. Eventually, his parents and two additional brothers joined him in California traveling by train in 1872, and his mother, Clarissa P. Fassett, lived with him in his Oakland home until her death in 1890. Chitt died the following year aged 61, and his is buried in Mountian View Cemetery in Oakland.
