BIOGRAPHY: TFG-30,31-Dr. John was born in Bennington, VT. In early life he moved to Cambridge, Vt. he was sent to Amherst, NH to study medicine with Dr. Peabody. He began his medical practice in Cambridge. He served in the War of 1812 as a surgeon in a regiment commanded by Lt. Col. Dixon. He was among those present on Jan 10, 1814 at the organizing of the Medical Society of Franklin Co., VT.
Dr. John decided to move West. He arrived in Vistula, Ohio on Oct. 12, 1832 where he immediately entered 80 acres of ladn at what is now the foot of Locust St. As there was no tavern, he at once erected one, calling ti Mansion House. He then began his own log residence on what is now the site fo the Westminster Church at the S.E. corner of Superior and Locust. Toledo is now having an urban renewal called Vistula Meadows. He was so competely over-worked that he decided to move from the West Side to the East Side. Here he built a home where the Cherry St. Bridge now terminates. He named his home Utah Post Office as all mail was left there for distribution. later the place was called Yondota then E. Toledo or Upper Town. He always wanted to be involved with agriculture but his skill and the people's needs never allowed this. His skill during a cholera epidemic was remarkable. He purchased a huge tract of uncultivated land where his son Elias farmed. He died at age eighty-four.
