BIOGRAPHY: TFG-37-Chauncy Shepperd was a contractor in the Michigan-Illinois Canal, traces of which can still be seen in South Chicago. In 1849 he left his wife and four sons, then living in St. Joseph, MO and outfitted wagons trains across the prairie to California. He made a fortune in the gold mining operations. Lucy took in boarders to support her family in his absence. He returned to St. Joseph and invested in a department store. This turned into a financial disaster as he trusted too many people. He later joined his two olders sons who were mining in Colorado. Lucy J. Harmon Fassett was a remarkable woman raising her boys against great odds.

1860 US Census three of his sons, Herbert, Chauncey and Alfred, are living with his sister, Eliza.
1870 US Census he is a Miner living in Central City, Gilpin Co., CO
