BIOGRAPHY: from obit
She attended the public schools in Nicholson until her sophomore year, when she went to Trenton, N.J., and graduated from Trenton Sr. High School. She graduated from Mansfield State College (Normal School) and attended Penn State University. Peg taught school for two years in the Nicholson Schools. Alvah Fassett (of Tunkhannock) and Peg were married at the Methodist Church in Montrose on June 14, 1930. Peg’s uncle, the Rev. Lumas Sanford who had previously served the Tunkhannock Methodist Church, officiated at their service. Peg and Al had five children: John Benton Fassett of Ft Myers, Fla.; Barbara Oski Beane of Lake Carey; Judith Aydelott of Franconia, N.H.; and, Frederick Godfrey Fassett of Oakland, Calif. Their 8-year-old daughter, Margaret Jane Fassett, predeceased them in 1945. Peg had a lifelong commitment to her community, civic and religious organizations. For 25 years, she worked with the Girl Scouts of America as both a scout and Brownie leader. She was the first den mother for the Tunkhannock Cub Scouts. Peg was a member of the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church and a past member of the Council of Ministries, past president and long time member of the United Methodist Women. She was a long-time volunteer at the Tyler Memorial Hospital and a member of the hospital auxiliary. Peg organized and ran the first Tyler Memorial Antique Show in 1961 She was also a life member of the Wyoming County Historical Society, the Tunkhannock Women’s Club and the Tunkhannock Scholarship Fund. Peg was a member of the auxiliary board of the Pennsylvania Hospital that for many years was the only women’s medical college. She was also a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution and was awarded a fifty-year pin in 1980. In addition, she was a life member of the Country Club of Scranton and she was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Littleton Rotary Club. Always an athlete and outdoorswoman, Peg loved to fly and earned her private pilot’s license in the 1940s. She was an avid hunter and fisherman, and joined her husband in pursuing these interests for over 60 years. She played sports in high school and college and played golf regularly until she suffered a stroke at the age of 93. Peg was involved with the Tunkhannock Library from the time she moved into the house next door to its first location on Marion Street in 1930. She was very proud to be named honorary chairman of the capital campaign for the new Tunkhannock Library in 1999. Her status was hardly “honorary” as she worked long hours on the phone and in person to help secure funding for the project. Peg and Al were honored for this work with the naming of the “Al & Peg Fassett Community Room” at the new library facility.
