Bennington FASSETT, John Vermont Historical Magazine, No XI, October 1867, pp 170-171 (extracted from a section dealing with the history of Bennington) Among the settlers in Bennington [Bennington County, Vermont] of 1761 was the family of John FASSETT [Sr.], at whose house the first town meeting was held in March 1762. He resided about half mile south of the meeting house near what has been lately known as the Doctor SWIFT place. He kept a tavern and the town meetings were at the house of "John FASSETT, Innholder" until 1767, when they were at the meeting house. In October 1764 Mr. [John] FASSETT [Sr.] was chosen Captain of the first military company formed in the town, by which title he was afterwards distinguished. He was one of the two representatives of the town chosen to the first state legislature which was in March 1778. BIOGRAPHY: TFG-27,28- John was called Deacon and Captain. At first he bought a farm at Hardwick, MA near Barre, MA in March 1753. In April 1762 he sold the farm to Jonathan Nye, Jr. and moved with his family to Bennington, VT. Much has been written concerning the patriotic, early pioneer. Rev. Isaac Jennings Memorials of a Century says: "John Fassett was a leading man in that - the second company of wise and brave pioneers who resisted the encroachment of New York - and laid the foundation of Vermont. - making the name of "Green Mountain Boys" famous. He kept a tavern one half mile south of The Green at Bennington Center. He acted as clerk at the proprietor's meetings which were held at this house. The first one was held March 31, 1762. He was elected Captain of the first military company in 1764 and he was one of the town's two Representatives at the first State Legislature. He was Clerk and Deacon of the First church and his name on the "Old Church Covenant". He was very regular in habit - in fact the saying was "It is as true as that John Fassett will be at prayer meeting at a certain hour."
At the first Proprietor's Meeting in the town of Bennington, six miles square was laid out in 64 equal parts of an acre each. The plot in the center was assigned for "Village Green" with lots being cast for the remaining acres. John kept htese records in a little 8 inch square leaved book, sewn together. Though time-worn, the record can yet be seen.
Rev. Isaac jennings, son of Rev Isaac Jennings, who wrote "Memorals of a Century", and also a minister as was his father at the Mother (First) chruch in Bennington write this concerning Deacon John Fassett and his boys: "My impression is that none of them were money makers but they were as honest as the light and greatly trusted for good sense and integrity. They were great singers (tenors). Deacon John and his six boys also were Revolutionary War soldiers."
