From a writeup at the Silver City, NM Museum
The next fire chief, Red Bolton, had been a volunteer under Gene Boren. He and his wife Ann had lived upstairs in the firehouse during the Boren years, and when he returned as chief in 1958 Bolton decided to occupy the second floor quarters instead of the larger first floor apartment traditionally reserved for the chiefs' families. Bolton hired Louis Martinez to serve as assistant chief in exchange for $250 per month and the downstairs living quarters (Martinez joined his family in their own home when he was off duty). Martinez recalls that there was just one volunteer fireman at that time, James Hagan. Ann and Red Bolton would open up the fire station on Wednesday nights for the locals to come and watch wrestling matches on television, at a time when few Silver City people had TV's in their homes. This tradition was kept up at the fire station for many years.
While Bolton was fire chief, the town traded in an older Chevrolet fire truck for a 1961 International (which the fire department still has and uses). The 1940 Ford fire truck, acquired when Rowland Ball was fire chief, remained on active duty. A 1958 red Chevy sedan was used by Bolton as the fire chief's car (the car later had an unscheduled stop in the lobby of the old Southern Hotel, when an eager young volunteer fireman was hurrying to a fire and miscalculated a turn).
Louis Martinez became fire chief in 1965, upon Red Bolton's retirement.
Excerpt from Silver City Enterprise, Thursday, 16 Oct 1958
Assumes Duties
Silver City has a new Fire Department chief, Julius (Red) Bolton, being appointed to this job the past week by Mayor William Soehle at a special meeting of the City Council. He succeeds Chief Gene Boren, who resigned effective Oct.15, after filling the position for the past 14 years, with a record for efficiency.
For some years, Bolton has served as a member of the Fire Department, hence is thoroughly experienced in all phases of fire fighting.
Under consideration by the Mayor and Councilmen is the appointment of an Assistant Fire Chief and possible addition of several volunteer firemen who are paid for answering fire calls and also for attending regular fire drills.

[15175] listed as m. 44 yrs - but this would have him m. at age 12 - believe it should be more like 34 yrs as this would line up with Annette (Nettie) as first born in 1867
