From her obit - She came to Reno, from New York, as a bride in 1876.
Julia was a charter member of the Reno Twentieth Century club and was active in civic affairs. She was also active in the kindergarten association and was a charter member of the Trinity Women's Guild.
More than forty years ago, seeing the need of a public library in Reno, Mrs. Bender organized the first Reno public Library. The library was located upstairs in the building at the Southwest corner of Sierra Street and Commercial row, where a grocery is now operated.
The library was supported by personal subscriptions and Mrs. Bender acted as librarian and collected the funds to keep the place going herself.
Mrs. Bender helped organize the Reno Unitarian church and read the sermons at the church for four years when the church funds were inadequate to secure a regular minister.
