BIOGRAPHY: TFG-45-Samuel M. was a photographer in Chicago, Il. He was a government photographer during the Civil War. He took a very fine picture of Abraham Lincoln. He was also a painter in oil.
Cornelia Adele was a famous painter in Washington , DC. She painted portraits of President Grant, Hayes and Garfield. Her picture "Florida Case before Electorial Commission, Feb. 5, 1877" hangs in the Easern Gallery of the Senate Wing of the Capital. This painting was used on a cover of Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine in 1972.
From History of the Western Reserve by Harriet Taylor Upton, Vol I, pag 582: "Cornelia Strong who married Samuel Fassett was an artist of great ability. Her price for Electorial Commission was $10,000, but Congress considered it too high and bouth it for much less. Samuel Fassett was a very successful Chicago photographer but the great Chicago fire destroyed his property and the family moved to Washington, DC, where he had a clerkship. They had seven beautiful children and alhtough it was sometimes hard for the family to have what they needed, Mrs. Fassett never lost her swetness nor her fine looks. At the time of her dath she had a commission to paint ivory miniatures of the president's wives to be exhibited in Washington, DC".
