BIOGRAPHY: TFG-200,201 - Both Betsy and Elijah are buried in unmarked graves in the South Branch Cemetery, Forkston, PA.
Craft's History of Luzurne and Wyoming Co., PA reads: "In 1794 Josiah Fassett came to Windham Township, Luzurne Co. and settled near his brother Elijah."
It is not known the exact year of his arrival. Elijah came to the area along with Col. Joseph Burgess and his wife Sarah Park Burgess. They first visited Black Walnut Bottom, about eight miles from Forkston, and on the Susquehanna River. They walked overland the eight miles. and arrived on top of Cedar Mt. Ledge, paused to rest and observed no clearing. Col. Burgess carried with him two boards with which to build a door. At the foot of the mountain they crossed the North Branch of the Mehoopany Creek on a fallen tree. They were then very near the Forks of the North and South branches of the Mehoopany Creek. Forkston was named for these forks. Nearby they found the Abraham Lott family living near a spring. Mrs. Lott was an Indian woman owning extensive land in the area.
Both men purchased land in Forkston, Wyoming Co., Pa. then known as Windham Township, Luzurne Co., PA. The deeds were first recorded in 1800 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The voting place for Windham Township was Scottsville, Pa. on the Susquehanna River, then called Hemlock Bottom. Josiah Fassett, Elijah's brother, settled there. Later their brother Reuben settled in Farr Hollow about half way between his brothers.
Elijah worked for some years on his land in the summer returning in the winter to Connecticut. In the spring of 1797 he returned from Connecticut on horse back ,with his bride. He had previously built a house, next to where the Methodist Church now stands in Forkston. The house was built of plank and sided over. It had a very steep roof, three fireplaces on the first floor and was wood ceiled inside. On other trips from Connecticut he had brought a potash kettle, a brass kettle and an ax. In 1810 he built and ran the first grist mill in Windham Township. In later years he retired by selling his mill and buying a farm very near the village first settled by Joseph Robinson from East Haven, Conn. This farm remained in the family until 1950.
Contemporary settlers were Stephen Frost, Charles DeWolf, Noah Adams, Aaron Adams, Elisha Ames, Henry Champion, Samuel Kasson, Azariah Winslow, Chapman Hitchcock (bridge builder), Abraham Lott-Vose, Alpheus Bowman, Benjamin Farr, Thomas Miles (Elijah's father in law), Eliakim Robinson who married Roxanna Miles;, sister to Elijah's wife, and his brother's Joseph Robinson, Chandler Robinson, Ruel Robinson along with their father, Capt. Jared Robinson. The Robinsons were from East Haven, Conn.
Although Mrs. Lott owned and sold considerable land to these early settlers Elijah Fassett, Stephen Frost, and Thomas Miles secured their land from an Israel Underwood on original deeds from 'the Susquehanna Co. The land lots each contained 125 acres and sold at $50 per lot.
The first schoolhouse was built in Forkston in 1805: Early teachers were Elihu Fassett, Reuben Fassett's son and John Spaulding who came from Vermont on horse back in 1814.
The author possesses several antiques from this era, a Spode teapot brought from Connecticut by Elizabeth Miles Fassett and a pine corner cupboard built by Joseph Robinson who was a fine draftsman. When he sold his farm to Elijah Fassett the corner cupboard was too big to get out of the door so Elijah Fassett came into ownership.
The tax rate in Brooklyn, Conn. and the U.S 1790 Census show only John and Joab Fassett there at that time. Where Elijah and Josiah were in these early 1800's is not known. Their brother, Reuben, was in Killingly, Conn. They certainly were on their way to Pennsylvania. Some think they were in the Wyoming Valley, Luzurne Co., PA area.
