BIOGRAPHY: TFG-229-F.G. Fassett, Jr., Damariscotta Mills, Maine 04553, wrote me the following concerning his ancestor Richard Fassett.
"Richard was settled in North Yarmouth, and later in Bath and in Bristol, Maine. He served in the Revolution on three occasions. He is reported to have been a cordwainer. John, his son, was a Master Mariner. Francis, John's son, was the first architect to establish a practice in Maine.
Richard was reportedly cabin boy, at the age of 14, in the flagship of Admiral Saunders, who was in support of General Wolfe before the Battle on the Plains of Abraham in 1759. Legend hath it that he deserted, stole a horse and made his way through the forests of Quebec into Maine. My grandfather, Francis, sometime before I was born, met J. Sloat Fassett of Albany at a dinner somewhere in New York. When introduced, each asked the other, "Do you know the horse thief story?" and each answered, "Yes" whereupon they concluded that they were probably cousins of some sort.
Dennis Fassett of Lynchburg, VA, possessed thirty years ago, a sea chest belonging to Richard (allegedly) that descended to him through his great-grandfather Alexander, son of Richard. That Richard burdened himself with a sea chest as well as a stolen horse is perhaps open to much doubt. But the sea chest exists."
TFG-230-The History of Brisol and Bremen, Maine, John Johnson, Printed in 1873 mentions on page 330:
Alexander Fassett and his brother, William, came from Ireland. William, unmarried, was killed by the Indians.
