BIOGRAPHY: William Alonzo THOMAS - TFG-47b
BIOGRAPHY: WILLIAM ALONZO THOMAS died at the residence of his son-in-law, T. M. Fassett, East Main Street, Canton, Sunday afternoon, June 8, 1913. Funeral services were held at the Disciple church at Alba, Wednesday, June 14, the interment being in the Alba Cemetery. With the death of William Alonzo Thomas almost the last representative of the generation that made Bradford County has passed away. He was the son of Jacob and Susannah (Rowley) Thomas, who came from New Hampshire in 1808, and settled in what is now Troy township, on what later became known as the A. H. Thomas farm, about four miles south of troy. Twelve years later Jacob and Susannah Thomas moved a mile and a half farther south, to a new farm. Their children were Zurah, who married Samuel Case), Alvin W., Samuel, Hiram, Chester, Allen, Lucy, who married Dummer Lilley), and William Alonzo, the subject of this sketch, who was born June 6, 1824, and who resided on the old farm, just north of Alba, until five or six years ago, when advancing years caused him to seek a home with his daughter in this place. He married, first, Jane Lilley, herself the daughter of one of the pioneers, and a sister of Eben and Dummer Lilley, who are well known in the history of the county. This union was blessed with two children, Lilley A. Thomas, of Standing Stone Township, and Mrs. T. M. Fassett, of this place. His second marriage was to the widow of Dr. Rockwell, of Troy, and a daughter of the late B. A. Long. In 1859 Mr. Thomas was elected a commissioner of Bradford County, was re-elected in 1862, and in 1866 was elected prothonotary of Bradford County; serving in this office two terms, retiring in 1872. During his official life he had also carefully managed his large farm in Troy Township, and after his retirement from office returned to the soil with the enthusiasm of a born farmer. In his earlier days he was a mighty hunter, and it was not until advancing years made it impossible that he finally hung up his old fashioned deer rifle and retired from the chase. Pleasant, affable, intelligent, he was always a good comrade and in the generation in which his active life was spent he was very popular among his fellows. During his later years he has had the respect and veneration of all.
